Did you know that the refreshing green pigment in plant leaves can also rejuvenate your skin and hair? Chlorophyll is being increasingly used in hair and skin treatments to enhance your beauty naturally and safely.

You can apply chlorophyll or use chlorophyll products to make your skin softer and smoother while also adding a youthful glow to it. Similarly, you can apply it to your long hair to make it strong, silky, and shiny. And this is just the tip of the iceberg!

About Chlorophyll And Its Uses

Chlorophyll is a pigment involved in photosynthesis, which is the synthesis of organic compounds by organisms to convert light energy to chemical energy for their life and growth.

Organisms such as green plants, cyanobacteria, and algae use chlorophyll to produce this chemical energy from light, using carbon dioxide in the process. Its chemical formula is C₅₅H₇₂O₅N₄Mg.

While its primary use of chlorophyll is the survival of the organisms using it, it also plays a key role in our health and nutrition. We naturally consume chlorophyll as a part of our diet for its nutritional benefits for the whole body. It may also be consumed internally as supplement tablets or chlorophyll water for its overall benefits.

Moreover, chlorophyll also offers specific advantages for your hair and skin when applied externally or consumed as a special supplement. In this blog, we will focus on these chlorophyll benefits for the skin and hair and then check out the best chlorophyll beauty products.

1. Reduces acne and inflammation

Chlorophyll is an effective anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial agent. This makes it a handy treatment for various kinds of bacterial infections, sebum buildup, and wounds on the skin. It is also used to enhance the anti-bacterial effects of light on the skin (photodynamic therapy).

2. Reduces wrinkling and ageing

Wrinkles are primarily caused due to damage caused by the sun and natural oxidation. The antioxidants in chlorophyll help reduce this damage when applied to the skin. This reduces wrinkling and restores your skin’s youthful appearance. Chlorophyll also acts as a natural sunscreen that helps to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

3. Reduces skin odour and infections

Home Recipe To Make Liquid Chlorophyll

Consult a doctor before you start your haircare and skincare journey with Chlorophyll

You can easily extract natural chlorophyll at your home and use it as a lotion or smoothie! All you need is 80 grams of picked parsley leaves, 6 cups of water, and any heating device.

Once you arrange these basic components, you just need to follow these simple steps to extract organic chlorophyll-

  • Wash and dry the parsley leaves.
  • Blend the leaves with water using a blender and process it till it becomes a bright green liquid.
  • Strain this liquid using a fine sieve into a saucepan and start heating it.
  • Keep the heat low and keep stirring slowly until you can see green particles rising up.
  • Next, pour this liquid into a jug and put it in the fridge to cool. You may add some ice cubes to it to speed up the cooling.
  • Once it is cold, pour the mixture through a muslin sieve slowly and throw the water after draining it.
  • This will leave you with around two tablespoons or 24 mg of chlorophyll in the sieve. Scrape this chlorophyll and store it in an airtight container in the fridge.
  • Use it fully within a week as storing it for a longer period is not suggested. You can apply it externally or consume it as a beverage for your skin and overall health.

You may also use a cup of spinach for making the same amount of chlorophyll at home. But you must avoid using chlorophyll in large amounts to avoid side effects.

Possible Side Effects

Applying or consuming concentrated chlorophyll may cause unwanted side effects, especially if you use it incorrectly or excessively.

Here are some side effects you should watch for as you start consuming chlorophyll:

  • Excess skin sensitivity to the sun
  • Photosensitive rashes and blisters
  • Skin itching and burning
  • Hair damage and itchiness on the scalp
  • Stained teeth
  • Gastrointestinal problems, discoloured stool and diarrhoea

To avoid these issues, you should consume or apply only small doses of chlorophyll or chlorophyll products. If you are eating supplements, keep the dosage below 300 mg daily and remember to stop the use of chlorophyll in any form if you feel any side effects. Besides, you should always consult a doctor to resolve all your concerns before using chlorophyll.

Ready to try chlorophyll for your hair and skin?

Chlorophyll is packed with nutrients, antioxidants, and anti-bacterial properties that can do wonders to improve and maintain your skin and hair. Moreover, you can easily extract it at home or go for specialised products for the best results.

However, research on chlorophyll is still ongoing and you must remember to verify all claims, consult a fitness expert, and take proper precautions before you apply or consume concentrated chlorophyll.

Careful and moderated use of chlorophyll will help you to avoid risks or side effects while enjoying all the powerful chlorophyll benefits for your hair and skin.
